Background History

The department of Anatomy, UMTGI was founded by the head of the department, Prof. Dr. Khin Thandar on Feb 11, 2016; about 4 months after opening ceremony of UMTGI. At that time, the department was in the initiative condition and did not possess enough teaching facilities and equipment. She made an effort to get the sufficient facilities including office supplies, small tutorial rooms, the classroom facilities, the equipment for histological study, the dissection rooms and cadaver storage room. Her major effort was the renovation of cadaver storage room to be in the well-standardized design. In Dec, 2016, the department was in a ready-to-teach-student condition despite it was not fully established. Then, the department has been teaching and training about 570 number of 2nd MBBS students since 2017 till now.

In Nov 2019, Prof. Dr. Zaw Zaw Latt became the head of the department when Prof. Dr. Khin Thandar was transferred to the University of Medicine 1, Yangon. He introduced a cadaver fixating method from the traditional formalin-fixed to the spirit salt method in order to minimize the formalin odour and formalin-induced irritation to the handlers, thereby providing the safer learning environment to the students and staffs. He also guided to outline “Our Attitude” for students to appreciate their silent mentors.
