Department of Forensic Medicine

The Department of Forensic Medicine was established at the University of Medicine, Taunggyi in December 2018. The department opened with three members of teaching staff: (1) Professor Thaung Lin, Head of the Department, (2) Dr. Sithu Myint, Lecturer and (3) Dr. Htoo Htoo Htet, Assistant Lecturer. Our department was located on the third floor of Tharaphy Building on the university campus.

Dr. Nay Lwin Aye was appointed as Senior Consultant and Associate Professor in December 2019.  Then Dr. Soe Min Min Nyunt, Associate Professor, and Dr. Sai Lin Htin Kyaw, Assistant Lecturer, were assigned to our department in late December 2019.

The new building of the Police Surgeon Office of Southern Shan State was opened in Sao San Htun Hospital in November 2019. The Police Surgeon Office is affiliated with the Department of Forensic Medicine, and so the Head of the Department of Forensic Medicine is responsible for dealing with medico-legal cases in addition to the teaching of forensic medicine to medical students, medical officers and other medical staff at Sao San Htun Hospital.

The Department of Forensic Medicine is currently offering undergraduate courses for final part I students. The course for the first batch of the University of Medicine, Taunggyi was started in June, 2019. At present, only undergraduate courses can be offered.
