Assessment & Evaluation

Formative assessment

(a) Three Class tests (Theory papers of ten multiple short questions type)
(b) Review of written assignments (writing of medicolegal reports and postmortem examination reports)
(c)  Post-test review with students who attained low marks in class tests
(d)  Weightage: one class test – 9% of total percentage

Three class tests = 27 %
Assignments = 3 %
Total = 30 % of total percentage

Note – Because of low teacher – student ratio, tutorial classes and small group discussions are not possible.

Summative assessment

(a) Method

  • Theory (Written)
  • Practical and Viva voce
    (Medico-legal report should be assessed in written examination and viva voce)

(b) Instrument (Question Type)

  • 3 hours Theory Paper
    (Multiple Choice Question or Short Questions and Multiple short questions type)

(c) Venue

  • Exam Hall
  • Viva Hall

(d) Weightage

  • Class work –  30%
  • Theory –  50%  (MSQ)
  • Practical & Viva voce  –  20%
    (The maximum marks for an ordinary student should not be more than 14.)

Note

    • If a student failed badly in one component (Class work, Theory or Practical and Viva voce), he/she will be regarded as failure in the final examination.
    • Badly failed means less than 33.33% in any of the above three components.
    • Compartment system will be used in summative assessment.

(e) Pass Marks

  • 50%(Final moderation mark – 46 %)

The moderation mark should not be considered as an automatic pass mark; actually the moderation should be based on the following factors:

    1. Marks obtained in other subjects
    2. Attendant percentage
    3. Performance in previous medical years
    4. Other factors such as unexpected illness or accidents before the examination.

(f) Distinction Marks

  • 75%

(g) Debar

  • The student will be debarred from final examination if the total class work is less than 21% of the total class work (or less than 7 out of 30 marks).
  • The criteria for debar should be based on one subject alone and not on the aggregate of all subjects.
Documentation process in class work performance, attendance and the component in promoting examination in the training period
  • All the students will be explained about the attendance and evaluation system including the debar system at the early lecture of academic year.
  • The recording of student’s attendance will be conducted by the “Card system“.
  • A reporting system will be issued to the students on a monthly basic and to the parents/guardian on a two monthly basic.
