The University accepts students from among those who obtain the highest marks in the science combination in the Basic Education High School Examination for that year. Students from the Mandalay Division, Shan State (South), Shan State (North), Shan State (East), Kayar State and ခက်ခဲသောဒေသဝင်ခွင့် are allotted to the University of Medicine, Taunggyi.
Students who have passed the General Certificate of Education and other examinations conducted by foreign Universities, and who seek admission to the University are given individual consideration by the Department of Medical Sciences. Candidates are required to appear for a written examination and a personal interview conducted by a special board.
